Reflection on Summary and Response Essay

Throughout the span of writing my Summary and Response Essay, “ Freud’s perception of doctors during the late 1800s and The Yellow Wallpaper”,  I was able to deeply understand the connection between Freud’s first lecture and The Yellow Wallpaper. The genre of my essay is both Explicatory and Analytical. While the audience I am explicitly writing to is my professors and class peers. As I wrote my paper, I made sure to add some background information even though I knew the readers already had knowledge on the topic. It was just the right amount of information to create solid transitions for my analysis. The audience reading my essay is also looking for the relations between Freud’s first lecture and The Yellow Wallpaper, which I made clear throughout my writing and thesis statement. I did this by using proper MLA format to state evidence from both texts while then explaining the information and relating it to my thesis. When I began composing the essay it was a little complicated when it came to taking so many ideas about a subject into only 2-3 pages. To start my piece I wrote my introduction in order to build both body paragraphs. However, I had trouble when it came to my conclusion paragraph. At that point, I noticed I implemented way too much information in the rest of my essay, and I needed to cut them down. Some of my sentences were very redundant and had no meaning to what I was trying to prove. After I was able to cut the sentences down I was able to build a firm conclusion.

At first, writing the essay was just to get it done for the grade, but after really getting into the readings and creating my thesis, I was very interested in the relationship between hysterical patients and doctors. As well as the mistreatment and misunderstanding many people with mental illness received, which was portrayed in both texts. Altogether, the whole purpose of the essay was to deeply look into Freud’s concerns and his ideas on doctors in the 1800s and how it relates to the narrator of The Yellow Wallpaper. As the writer, the purpose of my writing was to convince the reader that doctors did neglect their patients and were not entirely “educated” enough to understand mental illness. I did this through a very formal tone since my audience is my professors and peers. Inmplimatning a formal tone into an essay is the academic standard and what was expected for this essay. When using a specific tone, the tone needs to respect the audience you are speaking to. This allowed me to prove my point in a matter the reader will understand and connect with.
